Lynne Ramsay Reflects on Collaborating with Joaquin Phoenix at BFI

During a recent event at the BFI London Film Festival, acclaimed director Lynne Ramsay shared her experiences working with notable actors such as Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert Pattinson. Ramsay discussed her latest film, which features Lawrence as Grace, a new mother grappling with psychosis, and had its U.K. premiere at the Royal Festival Hall on October 6, 2025.
Insights from Working with Joaquin Phoenix
Ramsay reflected on her collaboration with Phoenix, who starred in her 2017 neo-noir psychological thriller, You Were Never Really Here. She described him as “totally terrifying” yet “amazing,” stating, “He’s a beast, you know?” Their first encounter left her a bit flustered, as she recalled asking him, “Are you left-handed or are you right-handed?”
Known for his dedication to his craft, Phoenix often surprised Ramsay and the crew during filming. She recounted a memorable moment when he intentionally fell down a set of stairs, prompting immediate concern from the team. “Everyone’s running, going, ‘What’s happened to Joaquin?!’” Ramsay said, highlighting Phoenix’s commitment to spontaneity in his performances. “Honestly, I’ve never worked with such an exciting actor in my life,” she added.
At the conclusion of filming, Phoenix expressed interest in working together again, suggesting they take the same crew to create another project immediately. Ramsay’s anecdotes delighted the audience, illustrating the unpredictable yet invigorating nature of their collaboration.
Challenges and Triumphs at Cannes
Ramsay also shared experiences from the production of You Were Never Really Here, particularly regarding a French financier who was insistent on showcasing the film at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. “He wanted to see a cut every week… I said, ‘You can wait until you get the director’s cut,’” she recalled, noting that the financier’s constant criticism during the editing process made it a challenging experience. Ultimately, the film secured a slot at Cannes, where it won Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Screenplay. Ramsay described the filmmaking journey as “the nuttiest film I had ever been on.”
Ramsay’s approach to incorporating music in her films evolved significantly after collaborating with Jonny Greenwood, who composed the score for You Were Never Really Here. Initially, she had avoided using music unless it was essential to a scene. However, Greenwood’s contributions changed her perspective. “I feel that music can tell you so much about character,” she explained, likening receiving Greenwood’s scores to “getting a Christmas present.”
As the session concluded, Ramsay provided a glimpse into her latest film featuring Lawrence and Pattinson, teasing that “Jennifer Lawrence was just in a permanently bonkers situation.” She elaborated on the complexities of the characters, highlighting themes of marriage and postpartum struggles. The narrative examines the evolving dynamics of relationships, especially as motherhood alters intimacy and connection.
The BFI London Film Festival runs from October 8-19, 2025, showcasing a diverse array of films and discussions, highlighting the innovative work of contemporary filmmakers like Lynne Ramsay.
