Iranian Unit Planned Assassination of Israeli Ambassador in Mexico
A high-ranking Iranian military unit allegedly plotted to assassinate the Israeli ambassador to Mexico, as revealed by a United States official familiar with the situation. The plan, orchestrated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, reportedly began towards the end of 2024 and remained active through the first half of 2025. This development underscores ongoing threats posed by Tehran against various targets abroad.
According to the anonymous source, the assassination plot has since been contained and is no longer considered a security threat. The official’s comments highlight a broader pattern of Iranian attempts to target government officials, journalists, and dissidents outside of Iran.
In response to the revelation, the Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing gratitude to Mexico for its role in thwarting what it described as a “terrorist network directed by Iran.” The ministry noted that the network aimed to attack Einat Kranz Neiger, who has been Israel’s ambassador to Mexico since August 2023. The ministry emphasized its commitment to working with international security and intelligence agencies to combat threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish interests worldwide.
Israel has long accused Iran of planning attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets internationally. In a related context, Australia recently expelled the Iranian ambassador after its intelligence agency uncovered Iran’s involvement in at least two antisemitic attacks within the country. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would also be designated as a terrorist organization.
The Iranian regime has previously been linked to plots against senior U.S. officials, particularly following the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the IRGC, in January 2020. Reports have indicated that Iran had planned assassinations of prominent figures such as former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
These incidents reflect escalating tensions between Iran and other nations and highlight the complex geopolitical landscape in which such threats are emerging. As diplomatic relations are tested, security agencies worldwide remain vigilant in monitoring and responding to potential threats from Iran and its associated entities.
