Gunmen Kill 9 and Wound 10 in South African Pub Shooting

At least nine individuals have died and ten others sustained injuries following a shooting at a pub in South Africa. The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. on Sunday in the township of Bekkersdal, located approximately 46 kilometers (28 miles) west of Johannesburg. This marks the second mass shooting in the country within a three-week span.

A group of about twelve unidentified suspects arrived in a white mini-bus and a silver sedan. They opened fire on patrons at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, continuing to shoot indiscriminately as they fled the scene. According to police reports, “some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen.” Among the deceased was a driver for an online car-hailing service, who was outside the pub during the attack.

Manhunt Underway as Violence Continues

In response to this tragic event, a manhunt has been initiated by the Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit, in collaboration with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit. The urgency of the search reflects a growing concern over gun violence in South Africa, where there have been several mass shootings at bars, often referred to as shebeens or taverns. Earlier this month, a shooting at an unlicensed bar near the South African capital resulted in the deaths of at least twelve people and injuries to thirteen others. In 2022, another shooting in the Johannesburg township of Soweto left sixteen dead.

With nearly 26,000 homicides reported in 2024, averaging more than seventy deaths per day, South Africa faces one of the highest homicide rates globally. Firearms are the leading cause of death in these homicides. Although the nation, home to 62 million people, has relatively strict gun control laws, officials indicate that many violent crimes are committed using illegal firearms.
