Issa Nlareb, a professional golfer from Cameroon, has undertaken an extraordinary journey from living on the streets to competing at the highest levels of golf, despite facing life-threatening challenges. After contracting bacterial meningitis in February 2018 during a tournament in Egypt, he underwent multiple amputations. Now, Nlareb aims to establish himself as one of the top golfers with disabilities.

Nlareb’s introduction to golf began under dire circumstances. Following the death of his mother when he was just 11 years old, he found himself homeless, living near the Yaoundé Golf Club in Cameroon. He began collecting golf balls to sell, which ultimately led him to the sport itself. With no formal training other than observing players and reading a book by Greg Norman, Nlareb learned the game through practice and interaction with golfers at the club.

During his teenage years, Nlareb honed his skills as a caddy, which allowed him to play occasional rounds of golf. By 2009, he turned professional. His ambitions included becoming the best golfer in the world, with dreams of competing against legends such as Tiger Woods. After several years of competing on African tours, he aimed to qualify for the Alps Tour, a third division circuit in Europe, and reached a peak in his career with wins at the Gabon and Senegal Opens.

Tragedy struck in February 2018. While participating in the Ein Bay Open in Egypt, Nlareb fell ill, resulting in a five-day coma and the diagnosis of septic shock due to bacterial meningitis. The medical prognosis was grim; he faced the amputation of both legs above the knee and most of his fingers. Initially resistant to the idea of amputation, he eventually underwent surgery three months after his coma, resulting in significant physical challenges.

Relearning to love golf proved difficult for Nlareb. He initially distanced himself from the sport post-surgery, focusing on his recovery and family life. A pivotal moment occurred when his daughter encouraged him to return to golf. Together they devised a method for him to swing a club again, reigniting his passion for the game.

By 2019, Nlareb made a remarkable comeback, competing in the African Golf Tour. In 2021, he participated in the US Adaptive Open, where he won his category for multiple limb amputees and finished fourth overall among men. His success in the tournament highlighted the lack of financial support for golfers with disabilities, as there were no cash prizes for the winners.

The financial burdens of competing in golf remain a significant challenge for Nlareb. He estimates that participating in the US Adaptive Open cost him around $10,000, which he managed through sponsorships. As the eighth-ranked player on the World Ranking for Golfers with Disabilities, he continues to seek support to continue playing at a competitive level.

Despite the obstacles he faces, Nlareb remains focused and determined. He expressed, “I know I have a good level, but it’s not that easy without a sponsor because it’s very expensive.” He emphasizes the need for support to pursue his passion for golf, stating, “I can’t live without golf. Golf is my life.”

Issa Nlareb’s story serves as an inspiration, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity and the profound impact of sport on personal recovery and fulfillment. As he continues to navigate his professional journey, his experiences resonate with many, proving that passion and determination can transcend even the most formidable challenges.
