French Crown Jewels Remain Missing After Louvre Heist
The French crown jewels, stolen during a daring robbery at the Louvre Museum on October 19, 2023, have not yet been located, according to Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau. Ten days after the heist, Beccuau confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that two suspects detained in connection with the crime have partially admitted to their involvement.
During a press conference in Paris, Beccuau expressed hope that the jewels, valued at approximately $102 million, would eventually be recovered and returned to the museum. These jewels, which date back hundreds of years, are highly regarded as national treasures.
The robbery unfolded in broad daylight when at least four individuals utilized a cherry-picker lift and cutting equipment to gain access to a first-floor gallery of the prestigious museum. Security footage captured their actions, providing critical evidence as detectives pursue leads in the case. Beccuau noted that investigators could not rule out the possibility that the perpetrators are linked to a larger criminal organization.
Despite the ongoing investigation, details about the suspects remain limited. The two men arrested on October 28 could only be detained for a maximum of 48 hours without formal charges under French law. Beccuau indicated that the men would be presented to a judge by the end of that day, suggesting that charges were forthcoming.
According to a source close to the investigation, the suspects, both in their thirties and known to law enforcement for previous thefts, may have been the ones who physically broke into the museum gallery. Evidence, including DNA findings, supports this theory. One of the men was apprehended while attempting to board a flight to Algeria from Charles de Gaulle Airport.
As investigators continue their search for the missing jewels, experts have raised concerns that the intricate pieces of jewelry may have already been dismantled, which would significantly reduce their value and likelihood of recovery. The police have deployed numerous detectives to track the whereabouts of the thieves, who were seen wearing balaclavas and high-visibility vests during the heist.
