Artists across Britain have taken a stand by reimagining the traditional St George’s flag, transforming it into a symbol of inclusivity and diversity. This initiative responds to a controversial campaign that has seen national flags prominently displayed in various public and private spaces. While many view this display as an expression of national pride, some instances have involved graffiti targeting businesses and places of worship associated with minority ethnic communities.

The project, known as the Everyone Welcome initiative, originated in Greater Manchester. It was sparked by the activities of hard-right groups who have been protesting outside asylum hotels and sharing locations of where they had displayed British flags on social media. In response, Cloe Gregson, an arts events manager, organized an open day inviting artists and the public to redesign St George’s flags with messages of acceptance.

The campaign gained traction through platforms like Skiddle and GoFundMe, quickly attracting over 100 participants and numerous venues eager to contribute. Gregson articulated the need for this project, noting, “We’ve had a pretty long history standing up for what’s right in Manchester… But I felt like I was driving around and I didn’t recognize it as the Manchester I’ve grown up in – it felt really jarring.”

Reclaiming the Flag

The initiative accelerated as Gregson connected with her all-women WhatsApp group, which helped amplify the message across their networks. “We’d love to see this idea spread to other cities – using creativity as a way of transforming a message that’s been used to divide,” she expressed. The goal is to redefine the St George’s flag as a welcoming symbol rather than a divisive one.

In York, approximately 70 miles from Manchester, a group named the International Flagging Campaign has also sought to promote inclusivity. Their efforts included raising funds through GoFundMe to purchase international flags, aiming to create a vibrant cityscape that reflects a global community. Campaigners have been actively hanging these diverse flags alongside the St George’s flags, countering the more nationalistic displays.

One spokesperson for the International Flagging Campaign remarked, “Friends who aren’t white have commented that they are starting to feel uncomfortable in the city… We feel the best way to show our flag can be flown for good reasons is to see it flying alongside a lot of other countries’ flags.”

Creative Expressions of Inclusivity

In recent weeks, flag displays have emerged in various locations, including a bridge in Pontllanfraith, Caerphilly, adorned with flags from numerous countries. This visual representation of unity is intended to counteract the divisive connotations some associate with the St George’s flag.

Among the artists contributing to this movement is Freya Wysocki, who has created a redesigned St George’s flag that emphasizes community. She explained, “I have re-envisioned England’s flag as a symbol of community: celebrating the welcoming and open parts of modern Englishness.” Her design features imagery that reflects movement and solidarity among people.

Another artist, Edward Meziani, drew inspiration from migratory birds for his flag titled “Built on Immigration / Birds on Migration.” He aims to celebrate the cultural contributions of various communities to the British landscape, reinforcing the message that diversity enriches society.

The Everyone Welcome project and similar campaigns underscore a growing movement in Britain to reclaim national symbols and promote messages of acceptance and unity. As these flags begin to populate public spaces, they serve as a reminder of the inclusive values that many hope will define the future of the nation.
