Woman Killed in Rare Mountain Lion Attack in Colorado Trail
URGENT UPDATE: A woman was tragically found dead on Thursday, October 12, 2023, in a suspected mountain lion attack on a hiking trail in northern Colorado. Authorities from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) have confirmed that hikers discovered the mountain lion near the victim and quickly intervened by throwing rocks to scare the animal away. However, despite their efforts, the woman had already lost her pulse by the time help arrived.
“Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are considered to be very rare,” stated CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose at a news conference.

Colorado is home to an estimated 3,800 to 4,000 mountain lions, with their populations increasing since being classified as a big game species in 1965. These animals primarily inhabit brushy areas and low-elevation woodlands, preying chiefly on deer and elk.
CPW urges hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to take precautions when encountering a mountain lion. Recommendations include making noise, holding objects overhead to appear larger, and slowly backing away to avoid confrontation.
