Woman Killed in Rare Mountain Lion Attack in Colorado Trail
URGENT UPDATE: A woman was tragically found dead on Thursday, October 12, 2023, in a suspected mountain lion attack on a hiking trail in northern Colorado. The incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County, shocking the local community and drawing attention to wildlife safety.
Authorities from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) have confirmed that hikers discovered the mountain lion near the victim and quickly intervened by throwing rocks to scare the animal away. However, despite their efforts, the woman had already lost her pulse by the time help arrived.
“Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are considered to be very rare,” stated CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose at a news conference.
This incident marks a significant event in Colorado’s history, as CPW reported that since 1990, there have been only 28 attacks, with the last fatality occurring in 1999. The Larimer County coroner is expected to release the victim’s identity and cause of death shortly.
In a decisive response, wildlife officers shot at a mountain lion at the scene, and subsequent actions led to the euthanization of the animal. Another mountain lion in the vicinity was also euthanized for public safety. CPW emphasized that wildlife involved in attacks on humans must be euthanized, and the animals will undergo testing for human DNA to confirm if they were responsible for the attack. They will also be examined for neurological diseases such as rabies and avian influenza.
Colorado is home to an estimated 3,800 to 4,000 mountain lions, with their populations increasing since being classified as a big game species in 1965. These animals primarily inhabit brushy areas and low-elevation woodlands, preying chiefly on deer and elk.
CPW urges hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to take precautions when encountering a mountain lion. Recommendations include making noise, holding objects overhead to appear larger, and slowly backing away to avoid confrontation.
The community is reeling from this shocking event, underscoring the rare yet real dangers posed by wildlife in outdoor spaces. As investigations continue, authorities are reminding the public to stay vigilant and informed about wildlife encounters.
This developing story highlights the intersection of human activity and wildlife, prompting discussions on safety in natural habitats. Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
