UPDATE: As the holiday season approaches, Waste Management of Iowa has just announced crucial recycling guidelines for Creston residents, emphasizing sustainable practices amidst the festive chaos. With Christmas just days away, families will soon find themselves grappling with mounds of wrapping paper and leftover decorations, prompting immediate action on how to recycle responsibly.

Residents are urged to pay attention to what goes into the recycling bin. “We are committed to helping Creston have a successful and sustainable holiday season. We encourage all residents to follow the specific guidelines for items like ribbons, bows, and tissue paper, choosing to reuse or donate whenever possible,” said WM Recycling Operations Director Matt McGurn. This collective effort is essential to effectively managing waste and supporting a robust circular economy.

Here are the critical dos and don’ts for holiday recycling:

– **Wrapping Paper**: Plain wrapping paper is recyclable, but anything with foil, glitter, or a plastic coating is not. Instead, consider using alternatives like newspaper, old wallpaper, or fabric. Reusing wrapping paper is also highly encouraged.
– **Holiday Bags**: Treat paper gift bags like wrapping paper. Plain paper bags can be recycled, while glossy or glittered bags must be saved for reuse.
– **Ribbons and Bows**: These festive decorations are not recyclable. Opt to reuse them or donate them to someone who can.
– **Tissue Paper**: Unfortunately, tissue paper cannot be recycled. It is best to reuse it for future gifts, enhancing your sustainability efforts.
– **Holiday Lights**: Do NOT place holiday lights in your curbside recycling bin; reuse is the best option for these items.

Additionally, residents should note that due to Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, trash and recycling pickup will be adjusted. Those with Thursday pickup will have their service moved to Friday, and all recycling will be pushed to Saturday. Regular service will resume on January 5.

As families prepare for the holidays, it’s vital to incorporate these recycling practices to reduce waste and promote sustainability. By following these guidelines, Creston residents can make a significant impact on their community’s environmental footprint.

Stay informed and share these crucial recycling tips with friends and family to ensure a greener holiday season for everyone!
