Vendors Prepare for Fiddlers Convention at Athens State NOW

UPDATE: The 58th annual Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention kicks off today at Athens State University with vendors eagerly preparing their booths. As excitement builds, local artisans are showcasing their unique creations, making this year’s event a must-see for attendees.
Vendors like Susie Elmore, owner of Unique Gifts by Susie, are already setting up their displays filled with whimsical crafts, including fairies, unicorns, and animals crafted from reclaimed wood. “I had too much time on my hands,” Elmore shared as she arranged her booth. Her creations, which range from $5 to $20, highlight her passion for inventing small treasures that fit in any space.
Elmore, 66, from Athens, explained that her daughter assists with the merchandise while she utilizes scrap wood provided by her son. “Everyone says they’re unique, so that’s why I call it Unique Gifts by Susie,” she added, emphasizing her commitment to creativity.
Meanwhile, Elmore’s sister, Leah Brown, 69, has traveled from Jacksonville Beach, Florida to showcase her stunning fused glass jewelry at the convention. “I wanted to come up here and spend the week with my sister,” Brown said, highlighting the familial bond that the festival fosters. Her jewelry ranges from $5 to $25, with most pieces priced at around $15.
Brown, who has been crafting jewelry for less than a year, is eager to learn and grow her skills. “It keeps my mind going because it’s learning constantly,” she remarked, emphasizing the mental benefits of engaging in her craft. Each piece she creates is one-of-a-kind, showcasing a variety of colors and intricate designs.
The Fiddlers Convention, which runs from July 12 to July 15, 2023, promises to be a vibrant celebration of music and crafts, with the majority of performances taking place from Thursday through Saturday night. This event not only supports local artisans but also strengthens community ties, attracting visitors from near and far.
As the festival unfolds, attendees can look forward to live fiddling performances, engaging workshops, and a variety of unique local products. Elmore and Brown are just two of many vendors contributing to the lively atmosphere, making the Fiddlers Convention an essential stop for anyone seeking a taste of local culture.
