USD 428 Welcomes Shelby Zuniga as New District Accountant

UPDATE: Great Bend Public Schools – USD 428 has officially announced the appointment of Shelby Zuniga as the district’s new accountant. This significant development comes as the district continues to enhance its financial operations and leadership, effective September 2023.

Zuniga, a proud native of Great Bend, Kansas, brings over 20 years of extensive experience in government and nonprofit accounting to her new role. A graduate of Great Bend High School in 1998, she holds multiple degrees including a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Fort Hays State University and a Master of Professional Accountancy from the University of Texas–Permian Basin.

Before joining USD 428, Zuniga served as the Chief Financial Officer at Sunflower Diversified Services Inc. and has a notable track record with the City of Midland, Texas, where she worked for the Finance Department. During her tenure, Zuniga excelled as Accounting Manager, overseeing critical financial operations and leading the annual audit process. In her final year, she served as the Internal Auditor, demonstrating her commitment to financial integrity.

Zuniga expressed her enthusiasm for the new position, stating,

“The District Accountant position at USD 428 fits nicely with my skill set and affords me the opportunity to serve the district where I was educated and where my own kids will be educated. I’ve always been proud to be a Great Bend Panther!”

John Popp, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations, praised Zuniga’s qualifications, acknowledging her expertise in accounting and her proven leadership in various settings. Popp stated,

“Shelby’s expertise in accounting and proven leadership in both government and nonprofit settings make her an excellent fit for USD 428. Her commitment to accuracy, transparency, and service will benefit our schools, staff, and community.”

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Zuniga enjoys a vibrant family life with her husband, Juan, and their twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia, who attend Little Panthers Preschool. The family is actively involved in their community, participating in activities at First Christian Church, working on vintage cars, and cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs.
