Urgent Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Hunterdon, Somerset
URGENT UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has just been issued for Hunterdon and Somerset counties in New Jersey, set to begin at 6 p.m. today and lasting until 2 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service warns of expected freezing rain, with total ice accumulations reaching up to one-tenth of an inch, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions.
Officials stress the importance of exercising caution while traveling. “Difficult travel conditions are possible,” the weather service cautions. Drivers are urged to slow down and prepare for possible power outages as ice builds up on power lines and tree branches.
This weather warning comes at a critical time, as winter conditions can lead to more than 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities annually in the U.S. and over 480,000 injuries. The impending freezing rain poses serious risks for motorists, and safety should be everyone’s priority.
If you must travel during this advisory, adhere to essential winter driving tips from the authorities:
– Inform family or friends about your travel plans, including your route and estimated arrival time.
– Ensure your vehicle is prepared with a full gas tank and essential winter supplies such as a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
– If stranded, remain calm and notify someone of your situation and location. Do not attempt to walk to safety; instead, signal for assistance by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror.
Be mindful of snow plows and give them ample room to operate. Check road conditions before your journey by calling 511 for the latest updates.
As January 28, 2024 progresses, stay tuned for updates and prioritize your safety on the roads. The National Weather Service advises everyone to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with icy conditions.
This advisory serves as a critical reminder of the dangers posed by winter weather. Stay safe, stay informed, and share this information with others to help keep your community safe during these challenging conditions.
