UPDATE: The historic stone arch bridge in Norristown has officially reopened following a major reconstruction project completed on November 3, 2023. The $7.9 million initiative, led by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), marks a significant milestone in enhancing transportation infrastructure in the region.

Construction on this 147-year-old bridge began in early 2024 and aimed to rehabilitate and widen the structure along Elm and Markley streets over Stony Creek. This project is the culmination of over a decade of improvements along the U.S. Route 202 south corridor, bringing critical upgrades to this busy thoroughfare.

The reconstruction involved extensive repairs to the bridge’s underside “arch barrels,” essential for its structural integrity. Crews also widened and repaved the intersection of Markley and Elm streets, enhancing safety and traffic flow in the area.

In addition to the core structural work, the project introduced new features, including a modern guiderail, updated signage, and curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Innovative adaptive traffic signals were installed, along with new sanitary sewer and water mains, ensuring that the infrastructure meets the demands of today’s traffic conditions.

This essential upgrade was financed with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds, reflecting a strong partnership between state and federal entities to improve local infrastructure.

The work on the U.S. Route 202 south corridor began in 2013, with earlier phases including the widening of Elm Street and Johnson Highway, which concluded in 2015. Subsequent improvements involved intersecting streets between Main and Elm, demonstrating a long-term commitment to enhancing traffic conditions in Norristown.

Officials encourage residents and commuters to visit www.us202-markleystreet.com for additional information on the project and its benefits. The reopening of this historic bridge not only improves traffic flow but also preserves an important piece of Norristown’s heritage, benefiting the community as a whole.

Stay tuned for further developments as local authorities continue to enhance transportation infrastructure in the region. This project is a testament to the ongoing efforts to provide safe and efficient travel for all residents.
