Urgent Update: Juniper Canyon Fire Grows to 10,000 Acres
UPDATE: The Juniper Canyon Fire has rapidly expanded to approximately 10,000 acres as of 9:01 a.m. on August 30, 2023, according to the State of Oregon Fires Dashboard. Fire crews have made significant progress in combating the blaze, but challenges remain as they work through steep and rugged terrain in Umatilla County.
Emergency Management officials reported that the fire, which started in the northern region of Umatilla County along Highway 730, has necessitated the activation of Emergency Support Function 4. This allows the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) to assume management of the situation, collaborating closely with the U.S. Forest Service.
Local farmers and ranchers have been instrumental in the firefighting efforts, constructing firelines with heavy machinery to help halt the fire’s advance. “Their quick action and strong partnership with fire officials have been essential in protecting homes and land,” stated Umatilla County Emergency Manager Sage DeLong.
On the evening of August 29, firefighters successfully contained a smaller wildfire that burned 62 acres near Sunridge Middle School in Pendleton. Thankfully, no injuries or significant property losses were reported, although some damage occurred. Fire Chief Anthony Pierotti noted that large pieces of wood may continue to smolder for days.
The Pendleton Fire and Ambulance Department led the response, supported by resources from various agencies, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs Wildland Fire and multiple local fire departments. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, as firefighting crews will maintain a strong presence in the area in the coming days.
Authorities stress that there are currently no evacuation orders or road closures; however, that could change as conditions evolve. “Expect to see a strong presence of firefighters and apparatus in the area,” DeLong cautioned, emphasizing the ongoing efforts required to contain the fire.
