Urgent Update: Demolition Begins at North Devon District Hospital
UPDATE: Demolition work is officially underway at North Devon District Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of staff accommodations. This urgent project is backed by £22.7 million in funding from the Government’s New Hospital Programme, aimed at replacing outdated facilities with modern residences for NHS staff.
The demolition involves the removal of two old staff residences, paving the way for new accommodations that will feature 120 ensuite bedrooms, including four family apartments and six accessible rooms. The new facilities will also include shared kitchen, living, and dining spaces, as well as various amenity areas, vital for enhancing the living standards of healthcare professionals at the Barnstaple site.
Local MP Ian Roome visited the site on November 21, 2023, expressing his support for the project. “The demolition of the old residences is a crucial first step in the Our Future Hospital programme. It frees up land for future phases, following extensive campaigning for proper investment,” Roome stated. He emphasized the need for continued pressure to secure further funding for essential upgrades, including an improved ICU and modern operating theatres.
The hospital trust has acknowledged that while this redevelopment is crucial, it is only part of a larger vision. Earlier this year, plans for a complete rebuild of the hospital were postponed to 2035 at the earliest, leaving ongoing concerns about the facility’s capabilities.
“Our Future Hospital (OFH) Programme represents a significant investment in the future of North Devon District Hospital,” said Chris Tidman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Royal Devon. He noted that this redevelopment is vital for attracting and retaining healthcare professionals, ensuring the hospital can continue to provide top-tier health services for the region.
However, the demolition work will come with some temporary disruptions. Patients and visitors have reported challenges finding parking at the hospital due to construction activities. The trust assured the public that parking restrictions will be managed to minimize inconvenience during peak outpatient hours.
With nearly all demolition materials set to be recycled, this project not only enhances hospital facilities but also promotes sustainability. As work progresses, the community is urged to stay informed about further developments and potential impacts on hospital access.
This urgent transformation at North Devon District Hospital is a pivotal moment for the local healthcare community, marking the beginning of a new chapter in providing essential services to the region. As the situation develops, stakeholders are encouraged to remain engaged and advocate for continuous improvements in healthcare infrastructure.
