UPDATE: A viral video of a 200-pound bear named Okan being treated for an upset stomach has captured widespread attention in Turkey this week. The footage shows Okan being wheeled on a stretcher to Istanbul University’s Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for a CT scan after consuming an excessive amount of fruit.

Okan’s distress was reported early this week, prompting immediate action from the Park of Istanbul Nature and Life Complex. “Our bear, Okan, was taken in with stomach pain and abdominal discomfort,” said Burak Memişoğlu, Chairman of the park. The veterinarians quickly diagnosed tenderness in his stomach area, leading to further examination.

The urgent medical check showed no serious issues. “He underwent a CT scan to check for any masses. The results came back clean, and his blood count was also checked—there were no problems,” Memişoğlu confirmed. Thankfully, Okan has recovered and is back at the wildlife park, where delighted visitors recognize him from the news.

This incident isn’t Okan’s first brush with dietary excess. He faced a similar situation three years ago, leading to his popular name. “When our new employee didn’t know our bear’s name, he quickly named him Okan, and it stuck,” Memişoğlu explained.

Okan’s condition serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring wildlife diets. The center is adjusting his food intake to prevent future incidents. “Our veterinarians and biologists are ensuring Okan eats seasonal fruits and vegetables, along with bonito fish and honey in the winter,” Memişoğlu shared.

As Okan splashes in his pool and plays in the wildlife park, his story highlights the bond between animals and humans and the joy they bring to visitors. The community remains engaged, eager to see how Okan thrives in the future as he continues to adapt to a healthier diet.
