UPDATE: The United Nations reports that aid workers are urgently racing against time to clear rubble and rebuild after a catastrophic earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on August 31, 2023, resulting in at least 2,200 fatalities and isolating entire communities. The 6.0-magnitude quake hit late at night, devastating low-rise buildings made predominantly of mud and wood, creating instant death traps for residents.

Authorities confirm that approximately 40,500 truckloads of debris needs to be removed across several provinces, as rescue operations face the challenges of Afghanistan’s rugged terrain. The epicenter of the quake was located in the remote Kunar Province, complicating efforts by the Taliban government and humanitarian agencies to reach those in dire need.

“Our mission is clear: we must start debris removal and reconstruction operations safely and swiftly,” stated Devanand Ramiah, from the UNDP’s Crisis Bureau. Families have been left homeless, with many sleeping outdoors in treacherous conditions. Aid workers are trekking for hours on foot to reach isolated communities, where basic needs remain unmet.

A spokesperson for the Taliban committee aiding survivors, Zia ur Rahman Speenghar, reported that ongoing assistance includes cash payments, food, tents, and mattresses. Three new roads are currently under construction in the Dewagal Valley, aiming to connect areas previously inaccessible. “Various countries and organizations have stepped in to help with housing, but this will take time,” Speenghar added.

The UN’s mission head to Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, emphasized that the country is facing a “perfect storm” of crises, which include natural disasters and economic instability. In a briefing to the UN Security Council, she highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to address personal freedoms, aid cuts, and the return of significant populations from neighboring countries.

As this urgent situation unfolds, the international community is called upon to provide immediate support to those impacted by this disaster. The clock is ticking, and the need for swift action has never been more critical. Stay tuned for further updates as aid efforts continue in this desperate race against time.
