Urgent Investigation Launched into Coushatta Casino Misconduct
UPDATE: The Louisiana State Police have launched an urgent investigation into potential financial misconduct at the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, Louisiana. This probe coincides with alarming reports of gunfire hitting the home of the tribe’s current leader, David Sickey, raising concerns about safety and security within the tribal community.
The investigation by the state’s Gaming Enforcement Division centers around allegations of misuse of casino funds linked to former tribal leader Jonathan Cernek and ex-employees Todd Stewart and Paula Corliss. These serious claims emerged from an outside audit and internal documents presented to the Coushatta Tribal Council, suggesting that a casino credit card may have been used for personal expenses related to Cernek’s home construction.
Cernek abruptly resigned in August 2024, without providing a public explanation. Attempts to reach him and Stewart for comments have been unsuccessful. However, Corliss, who claims she was fired for allowing Cernek access to her office post-resignation, indicated that she had been questioned by FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs agents last year regarding the casino’s finances. While she has not been contacted by the state police, the investigation is ongoing.
Federal agencies have remained tight-lipped about their involvement due to restrictions from the current government shutdown. However, documents from the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) reveal that the federal watchdog instructed the Coushatta Tribal Gaming Commission in September to review Stewart’s gaming license. Subsequently, Stewart lost his license, while Corliss faced a suspension after failing to contest the decision.
As the financial investigation unfolds, a shocking incident has raised further alarm. A bullet struck the home of Chairman Sickey late Sunday night, piercing the bedroom of one of his children while they slept. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, along with Coushatta Tribal Police and federal authorities, are collaborating on this disturbing case.
The Sickey family resides near Iowa, Louisiana, approximately 45 minutes from the tribe’s reservation. During a recent meeting, the Coushatta Tribal Council did not disclose whether they discussed the casino’s internal investigation or the recent shooting incident.
These developing stories cast a shadow over the Coushatta Casino Resort, which is already under scrutiny for its financial dealings. As authorities continue to investigate, the community watches closely, concerned about the implications for the tribe’s leadership and safety. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as new information emerges.
