URGENT: ICE Officer Shoots Woman in Minneapolis; Homan Defends Agents
UPDATE: A woman was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis earlier today, prompting immediate scrutiny of the agency’s practices. Tom Homan, the former border czar for the Trump administration, defended the actions of the officers involved, claiming they acted within policy guidelines. Homan’s remarks came during an interview with CBS News on the same day as the incident.
In a statement, Homan said, “I have not seen ICE act out outside of policy. If they are acting outside of policy, I’m not aware of it.” He emphasized the importance of allowing an investigation to unfold, stating, “It would be unprofessional to comment on what I think happened in that situation.” Homan’s comments are particularly significant as they come in the wake of heightened tensions surrounding ICE’s activities.
The tragic shooting involved Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman, who witnesses claim was attempting to flee when she was shot. According to reports, she was engaged with ICE officers at the time of the incident. Homan refrained from elaborating on the specifics of the case, citing the active investigation.
“Let the investigation play out and hold people accountable based on the investigation,” Homan added.
Democrats have expressed outrage over the incident, with Rep. Pramila Jayapal declaring, “We can’t just keep authorizing money for these illegal killers. That’s what they are, this rogue force.” Her comments underscore a growing rift between party lines regarding ICE’s operations and funding.
Rep. Ro Khanna has gone further, calling for the arrest of the officer involved, stating, “We should be opposing the hundreds of billions of dollars going to a lawless agency.” The incident has ignited calls for reform and accountability within ICE, reflecting broader concerns about immigration enforcement practices.
In contrast, some Republicans, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, have rallied in defense of ICE. Emmer stated, “Our brave ICE agents put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities from dangerous criminals.” His remarks highlight the complexities of the ongoing debate surrounding immigration enforcement.
The Department of Homeland Security’s assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, also defended the actions of the ICE officer, claiming he fired in self-defense. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots,” she said, asserting that Good “weaponized her vehicle” in an attempt to harm the officers.
However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has disputed this narrative, describing the claims made by McLaughlin as “b—s—.” Frey stated that he viewed footage of the incident and called for greater transparency regarding the events that transpired.
As this situation develops, the community remains on edge, and the call for justice amplifies. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide updates in the coming days. Watch for further developments as activists and lawmakers continue to push for accountability and reform within ICE.
