UPDATE: A powerful storm is currently unleashing heavy rain on over 22 million people across Southern California, with severe flash flooding and mudslide risks escalating rapidly. The first wave of intense rain began early this morning, with a second, more powerful surge anticipated between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. PST today.

Authorities report that rainfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour, accompanied by scattered thunderstorms that may bring strong winds, lightning, and even hail. Flood watches are currently in effect for major areas including Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Riverside, and San Diego, lasting through Saturday evening.

In the Los Angeles and Santa Barbara regions, a significant level 3 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall and flash flooding has been issued, raising concerns particularly in wildfire burn scar areas. These locations are extremely vulnerable to flash floods, mudslides, and debris flows.

Evacuation warnings have been activated in certain at-risk areas, and some evacuation orders are already in place for regions facing heightened mudslide dangers. The mountains of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties could see rainfall totals between 4 to 6 inches, a staggering amount considering that Los Angeles typically sees just 0.8 inches throughout the entire month of November.

As the heavy rain is expected to taper off by tonight, an unsettled weather pattern will persist into early next week, with additional wet weather on the horizon. The threats of flash flooding, debris flows, and mudslides will remain critical concerns for several days ahead, particularly as saturated soils struggle to absorb further rainfall in sensitive areas.

Authorities are urging residents to prepare for potential emergencies. It’s crucial to stay updated on local conditions and heed evacuation orders when necessary.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
