Urgent: Finnish Baking Workshop Celebrates Coffee Bread Jan. 25
UPDATE: A hands-on Finnish Baking Workshop is set to take place on January 25, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Finnish Center at Saima Park in Fitchburg. This exciting event invites participants to celebrate Finland’s beloved coffee bread, known as pulla, in an engaging and interactive setting.
The workshop, led by Finland native Saija Laurla, promises to be an unforgettable experience. Participants will have the opportunity to prepare and bake traditional Finnish bread, learning about its many variations, including pulla, nisu, and the popular cinnamon rolls known as korvapuusti. “Whichever name you use, we invite you to celebrate it with us — and bake it,” Laurla stated, emphasizing the importance of these cherished culinary traditions.
This workshop is not just about baking; it’s a cultural experience that highlights the significance of coffee bread in Finnish society. Across Finland, pulla is a widely loved treat, often filled with flavors like caramel, vanilla cream, and strawberry jam. “A loved child has many names,” Laurla said, noting the regional differences in terminology, including nisu in western Finland and vehnänen in local dialects.
The workshop has a maximum capacity of 40 participants, making early registration essential. The cost is $25 for members of the Finnish Center and $30 for non-members. To secure your spot, interested bakers are encouraged to email [email protected] or call 978-407-9690.
Don’t miss your chance to dive into the rich flavors and traditions of Finnish baking! Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a curious novice, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to connect with the community and create delicious memories. Join us on January 25 to celebrate the magic of pulla and more!
