Urgent Fall Prevention Workshop Draws Crowd at Stafford Library

STAFFORD, August 26, 2023 — A significant turnout at the Nora Larabee Memorial Library today as nearly 20 attendees participated in Jennifer Gleason’s urgent workshop on fall prevention. With falls representing a major health risk, the event titled “Don’t Fall for It!” offered essential strategies to enhance safety and regain confidence in mobility.
Participants learned crucial tips to elevate their activity levels, improve their range of motion, and restore their sense of balance. Gleason emphasized that these goals can be achieved through a low-stress exercise class held at the local Recreation Center every Monday and Thursday morning. With high demand, a waiting list is already forming, and additional classes may be scheduled to accommodate those interested.
The workshop also addressed practical safety measures for the home. Important recommendations included:
– Removing clutter to clear pathways
– Stabilizing or eliminating area rugs
– Installing night lights for visibility
– Managing extension cords carefully
– Evaluating footwear for better support
– Considering the installation of grab bars and handrails
One key takeaway was to simply slow down. Attendees were urged to allocate sufficient time for activities to avoid rushed movements that can lead to falls. “Regain your confidence in walking,” Gleason advised, stressing the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle.
The library also hosted a “Recently Read” book conversation later in the day at 5:30 PM, where community members discussed diverse literary works, including:
– “Where the Blue Sky Begins” by Katie Powner
– “The Crash” by Freida McFadden
– “Heart of the West” by Penelope Williamson
– “James” by Percival Everett
– “Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen” by Sarah Bird
– “Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving” by Mo Rocca
These discussions highlighted the vibrant community engagement at the library, making it a hub for both education and social interaction.
Looking ahead, the library has scheduled several engaging events, including:
– **Preschool Story Hour** every Monday from 10-11 AM
– **ESOL classes** on Wednesdays at 6 PM (except the second Wednesday of the month)
– The **Library Land Sale** on September 8 at 11 AM
– A **Book Challenge** running from August 1 to November 1
