Urgent Call for Volunteers: Help Pack 12,500 Backpacks Now!

URGENT UPDATE: Volunteers are urgently needed for the Big Backpack Build, a vital initiative aimed at equipping thousands of Kent County students with essential school supplies. On Tuesday, August 12, 2024, from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will convene at DeVos Place to pack a staggering 12,500 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, folders, and other classroom essentials.
Organized by the local nonprofit Storehouse of Community Resources, this event plays a crucial role in preparing students for academic success. “Every backpack packed is a step towards ensuring that our students are ready to learn,” said Kate Veldman, KSSN coordinator at Kentwood’s Pinewood Middle School.
Volunteers aged 18 and older, families with older children, and corporate groups are encouraged to sign up online to join this impactful effort. Participants should come dressed comfortably as they will be on their feet for the duration of the event. Light snacks will be provided to keep energy levels up during the packing process.
In addition to packing, there are also opportunities for volunteers to assist with distributing backpacks during In The Image’s SHOES 2025 program, which runs from August 13-15. Each backpack will be given for free with every new pair of shoes provided, making this a dual opportunity to support local students.
The remaining backpacks will be disseminated across Kent County through the Kent School Services Network and its dedicated team of coordinators. Last year’s inaugural event saw over 150 volunteers from KSSN and local businesses come together to pack more than 10,000 backpacks, showcasing the community’s commitment to education.
Supporters who are unable to volunteer can still make a difference by donating online to help cover the costs of backpacks and supplies. This is a critical moment for our community to come together and ensure that every child starts the school year equipped for success.
As the event approaches, follow updates on social media and other platforms to stay informed about volunteer opportunities and how you can help. This is more than just an event; it’s a chance to impact the lives of Kent County students profoundly. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to contribute—sign up now and make a significant difference!
