Urgent Bridge Replacement on U.S. 56 Begins Oct. 13 in Rice County

UPDATE: A critical bridge replacement project on U.S. 56 in Rice County is set to begin the week of October 13, 2023. Originally scheduled for September, this urgent project will replace a box culvert-style bridge located just south of the city of Chase, between 7th and 8th roads.
The existing bridge has reached the end of its useful life, prompting the need for immediate action. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) confirms that the project will cost approximately $1.8 million and will be led by Reece Construction of Salina. Completion is anticipated by spring 2026.
During construction, traffic flow will be reduced to a single lane through the work zone, controlled by temporary traffic signals. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes, and are urged to slow down and remain vigilant in the area.

This bridge replacement not only impacts local traffic but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing infrastructure improvements essential for public safety and mobility in the region. As work progresses, the community is advised to stay informed and plan their routes accordingly.
