Union County Approves Replacement for Afton CARE Vehicle Today

URGENT UPDATE: Union County has just approved the immediate replacement of a 28-year-old vehicle at the Afton residential CARE facility. This critical decision was made during last Wednesday’s Union County Board of Supervisors meeting, where officials confirmed the purchase of a 2022 Chrysler Voyager for approximately $23,000.
The old van, which has been a lifeline for residents, was deemed to be nearing the end of its service life after thorough evaluations by mechanics. CARE relies heavily on its vehicle fleet to transport residents to essential amenities in nearby Creston, making this replacement an urgent necessity.
The Board initially tabled the decision at the previous meeting, allowing CARE to apply for the purchase through county approval. The vehicle’s timely replacement is essential for maintaining the quality of care and services for the residents at Afton.
In addition to the vehicle, the Board plans to consider the purchase of a new phone system, projected to cost the county $8,800, at a future meeting. This system will enhance communication capabilities within the facility.
In other Union County developments, EMA Coordinator Paul Ver Meer was recently approved for a county credit card as he transitions from his role as Creston Police Chief to his new position. Ver Meer officially began his duties this month, marking a significant change in the county’s emergency management leadership.
Stay tuned for further updates as these developments unfold. The timely decisions made by the Union County Board of Supervisors underscore their commitment to providing essential services and support to the community.
