UPDATE: A Ukrainian startup is leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle the escalating threat of Russian ambush drones targeting supply trucks. Dropla, founded by V’yacheslav Shvaydak, aims to enhance battlefield safety with its innovative software, Blue Eyes, designed to detect and neutralize explosive threats in real-time.

In recent months, Ukrainian supply routes have become increasingly perilous as Russian forces deploy quadcopters as ambush weapons. These drones can remain undetected, lying in wait for convoys just 30 feet away, ready to strike with devastating efficiency. As the conflict intensifies, the need for effective countermeasures has never been more urgent.

Shvaydak’s Blue Eyes technology processes video feeds from inexpensive quadcopters flying ahead of supply trucks, identifying over 170 types of explosive threats, including mines and ambush drones. The software’s rapid analysis allows troops to make informed decisions on-the-fly, crucial for navigating the dynamic threat environment.

“Our drones must fly in sync with the trucks,” Shvaydak explained at a robotics conference in Svendborg, Denmark. “Delays can cost lives.” He emphasized that waiting for data to be processed after a drone’s return could introduce a significant delay of up to 30 minutes—too late for vulnerable convoys.

As reports of ambush drones surged this summer, Dropla’s team of Ukrainian engineers honed the AI to detect these idling threats. Once identified, the coordinates of enemy drones and landmines are relayed to Ukraine’s battle management system, enabling commanders to take swift action. “Detecting just one drone could save lives,” Shvaydak added.

Experts underscore the critical need for Ukraine to counter these tactics, especially in high-intensity areas like Pokrovsk and Kupyansk. Federico Borsari, a researcher at the Center for European Policy Analysis, stated, “Ambush drones can completely disrupt logistical chains, making constant situational awareness essential.”

The Blue Eyes system incorporates a 2.1-kg metal box that connects to Ukrainian command centers and can work with any camera-equipped quadcopter. Shvaydak revealed that the AI processes up to 130 frames per second, aiming to improve efficiency further as the technology scales up in frontline operations.

Since early summer, multiple Ukrainian units have tested Blue Eyes in combat conditions, reflecting an urgent need to adapt to the fast-evolving battlefield landscape. With continuous updates and training, Dropla’s AI is poised to become a vital asset for Ukrainian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that the world is entering an AI arms race, with Ukraine at the forefront of these developments. “Drones are becoming increasingly autonomous, and we must be ready,” he warned, highlighting the need for ongoing innovation to counter threats.
