UPDATE: The University of Central Florida (UCF) has decisively defeated the University of Maine 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament on November 10, 2023, in Orlando, Florida. This loss marks the third consecutive season the Black Bears have exited in the first round, concluding their season with a record of 6-8-4.

In a game that unfolded quickly, UCF’s Rajanah Reed netted the first goal just 15 minutes into the match, setting the tone for the Knights’ victory. The second goal came from Hannah Boughton in the second half, solidifying UCF’s advance to the next round. With this win, UCF improves to 12-3-5 and is set to face No. 2 Duke, which triumphed over Elon with a score of 3-0 in their opening match.

The Black Bears had made their way into the tournament after a hard-fought victory against Vermont, winning 3-2 in the America East Conference championship game, which required a tense penalty shootout that ended 4-3. Despite the disappointment, Maine’s goalkeeper Elena Barenburg showcased her skills, making three crucial saves during the match.

As UCF prepares for their next challenge against Duke, the implications of Maine’s early exit resonate deeply for the team and fans alike. The Black Bears will be looking to regroup and build for next season after another tough tournament experience.
