UPDATE: President Donald Trump has declared he is “ready to do major sanctions” against Russia as of August 26, 2023, contingent upon NATO nations ceasing their purchases of Russian oil. Trump is also calling for the alliance to impose up to 100% tariffs on China until the ongoing war with Ukraine concludes.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed urgency, stating, “I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.” His remarks highlight the stalled peace talks as he pressures NATO members to act decisively against Russia’s aggression.

Trump criticized NATO’s commitment, claiming it has been “far less than 100%,” and described the continued purchase of Russian oil as “shocking.” He argued that imposing sanctions on Russia alongside hefty tariffs on China “will also be of great help” in ending the conflict, promising to lift tariffs once peace is achieved.

He claimed that Turkey has been the third-largest buyer of Russian oil since 2023, following China and India, stating that “these powerful tariffs will break that grip” China has on Russia. Trump emphasized the human cost of the war, stating, “If NATO does as I say, the WAR will end quickly, and all of those lives lost will be saved!”

In addition, the U.S. is reportedly urging nations from the Group of Seven (G7)—which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S.—to impose higher tariffs on India and China to further pressure Russia into peace talks. Earlier this week, Trump called on the EU to consider tariffs of up to 100% on these nations, noting that one-fifth of the EU’s gas supply comes from Russia.

The urgency of the situation is reflected in Trump’s direct threats to India, accusing officials of indifference to the loss of life in Ukraine. Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska in August raised expectations for dialogue; however, no agreements were reached, intensifying calls for immediate action.

As the international landscape shifts, all eyes are on NATO and its response to Trump’s demands. The implications of these potential sanctions and tariffs could reshape global trade dynamics and influence the trajectory of the war in Ukraine.
