Trump Announces Urgent Meeting with Colombia’s Petro After Tensions
UPDATE: In a sudden shift of tone, former President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro following a week of escalating tensions. Trump, who previously stated that a military operation against Colombia “sounds good to me,” is now expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the White House in Washington D.C., with arrangements being coordinated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Colombia’s Foreign Minister. “It was a Great Honor to speak with the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro,” Trump said. “I appreciated his call and tone, and look forward to meeting him in the near future.”
This announcement marks a significant departure from their historically strained relationship, where mutual animosity has characterized their interactions. Both leaders have made headlines in recent months, with Trump accusing Petro of fostering ties with narco-terrorist organizations, while Petro has portrayed Trump as a warmonger inflaming the drug war.
In a post on social media platform X, Petro elaborated on their call, proposing a Pan-American alliance focused on clean energy as a means to foster “global peace and democracy.” He emphasized the urgent need for investment in clean energy, stating that the United States currently holds $500 billion for such initiatives. “Using Latin America solely for oil would lead to the destruction of international law and therefore to barbarism and a third world war,” Petro warned.
The meeting could represent a turning point in U.S.-Colombia relations, reminiscent of Trump’s earlier diplomatic outreach to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Observers are keen to see if this newfound willingness to engage translates into actionable policy changes, especially given the backdrop of escalating drug-related violence and political discord in the region.
As this situation unfolds, the world will be watching closely. Will Trump and Petro find common ground, or will past grievances overshadow potential progress? Stay tuned for updates on this rapidly developing story.
