Trey McBride Sets Record with 119 Catches in Tough Loss
UPDATE: Arizona Cardinals’ tight end Trey McBride has made history during a challenging season, breaking the NFL single-season record for catches by a tight end. In a tough 37-14 defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, McBride achieved a remarkable 119 receptions, surpassing Zach Ertz‘s record of 116 set in 2018.
The milestone is bittersweet for McBride, who expressed mixed emotions after the game. “I wish I was more excited about it right now,” he stated. “Maybe after the season looking back it will be something that I’m thankful for and cherish. But right now, it’s frustrating.”
McBride’s stellar performance included 10 catches and 76 receiving yards. He now needs just 33 yards in next week’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams to break the franchise record for yards by a tight end, currently held by Hall of Famer Jackie Smith at 1,205 yards from 1967.
Despite the team’s struggles, McBride’s accomplishments shine. He is now the only tight end in franchise history, alongside Smith, to be named to the Pro Bowl in consecutive seasons. Coach Jonathan Gannon praised McBride’s dedication, stating, “He shows up to work every day and battles. He’s one of the best players out there.”
McBride’s excitement over the record is overshadowed by the team’s performance. He scored a career-high 11 touchdowns this season with an 18-yard touchdown catch late in the game. “Obviously, it’s really cool,” McBride acknowledged. “I’m thankful for my teammates, my coaches, all those guys. But honestly, it doesn’t really matter. Would love to have won the game, would love to have played better as an offense, but it just wasn’t there today.”
As the Cardinals look ahead, all eyes will be on McBride as he aims to shatter more records and lead his team to better performances in the remaining games of the season.
