BREAKING: A Trenton smoke shop owner has been charged with illegal marijuana sales, marking a significant crackdown on unlicensed cannabis operations in New Jersey. The 32-year-old man, identified as the owner of “Moe Weed,” was arrested on September 2, 2023, after a two-month investigation revealed multiple undercover purchases of marijuana at his shop on South Broad Street.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office announced that the suspect faces two counts of third-degree distribution of a controlled dangerous substance. Authorities seized six ounces of marijuana with an estimated street value of $2,000 during the operation, conducted by the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, and the Trenton Police Department.

This urgent investigation highlights the ongoing issue of unregulated cannabis sales in New Jersey. Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “This operation should serve as a notice to unlicensed distributors who are illegally selling cannabis without complying with state standards and regulation. These dispensaries will be subject to investigation, which may result in the seizure of illegally sold marijuana and the arrest of individuals engaged in its sale without a license from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.”

In a surprising twist, the shop owner claims he is suing the city for damages after being denied a cannabis license prior to the investigation. He asserts, “I did everything correctly. The entire process. I had conditional cannabis license, approved from Trenton’s cannabis board, and approved for zoning.” However, his previous legal troubles include a 2021 charge for first-degree manufacturing and distributing marijuana.

Following his recent arrest, the man has been released from custody but remains under scrutiny as the investigation continues. The legal landscape surrounding cannabis sales in New Jersey is rapidly evolving, and this case underscores the urgent need for compliance with state regulations.

As authorities ramp up efforts against unlicensed dispensaries, community members are urged to report any suspicious activity related to illegal cannabis sales. This developing situation is one to watch, as it could shape the future of cannabis regulation in the state.
