trash-strike-in-fremont-residents-face-piling-garbage-urgent-action-needed

URGENT UPDATE: The trash pickup strike by Republic Services has entered its second week, leaving Fremont residents grappling with mounting piles of garbage. As frustration escalates, the city is taking action with additional drivers scheduled to hit the streets starting today, July 15, 2025.

Garbage trucks will be returning to Fremont to address the backlog, with priority given to those whose trash is typically collected on Wednesdays. However, the situation remains dire as many residents are resorting to dropping off their waste at a local recycling center, where lines are forming as early as 6 AM.

The strike stems from union members demanding better pay and benefits, with negotiations reportedly progressing. Republic Services is set to meet with union representatives again today, but no resolution appears imminent. Residents like Annalee Nagami are feeling the pressure, saying, “All of our trash cans are full, and it’s an inconvenience for sure.”

Another resident, Al Hernandez, expressed concern about the unsightly garbage, stating, “We don’t like seeing garbage all over the place. It stinks.” The situation poses real health risks, as David Canepa, President of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, emphasized the urgency of resuming trash pickup. He warned of potential rodent infestations and disease spread if waste continues to accumulate.

“Families shouldn’t have to live next to rotting waste while a multi-billion-dollar company sits idle,” Canepa said.

The City of Fremont has requested patience from residents who are dropping off trash, acknowledging the lengthy wait times at recycling centers. As the strike persists with no clear end in sight, the community is left grappling with the fallout from this ongoing dispute.

As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay informed and watch for updates on trash collection schedules. The urgency of resolving this strike has reached a critical point, highlighting the need for immediate action from all parties involved.
