UPDATE: A devastating tragedy unfolded on the set of Emily in Paris when assistant director Diego Borella collapsed and died during filming in Venice on Thursday evening. Borella fell ill around 7 p.m. while crew members were preparing to film a crucial scene at the iconic Hotel Danieli. Despite immediate medical attention from the show’s on-set team, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local Italian reports suggest that Borella likely suffered a sudden heart attack. His unexpected passing has sent shockwaves through the production team. In a heartfelt statement, a spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios expressed, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Borella, who had been hired locally as a third assistant director, previously contributed to the Italian medical drama DOC – Nelle tue mani in 2022. Following the incident, production was briefly halted but has since resumed as of Saturday.

The highly anticipated fifth season of Emily in Paris, which was officially greenlit by Netflix in September 2022, began filming in Rome earlier this year before moving to Paris and subsequently to Venice for its final scenes. Showrunner Darren Star had teased exciting developments for the upcoming season, stating, “I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up.”

Despite this heartbreaking loss, the series is still set to premiere on Netflix on December 18, 2023. Fans and followers of the show are reminded of the human stories behind the camera, as production teams work tirelessly to bring their vision to life.

As updates continue to unfold, the impact of Borella’s passing is felt deeply among colleagues and fans alike. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of life in the fast-paced world of television production.
