UPDATE: The Paws for a Cause pantry in Tower City is now offering a wide range of essential items beyond just pet food, providing crucial support for local families. Located at 729 East Grand Ave., the pantry is open to all residents, regardless of income, and is dedicated to easing the financial burden of grocery costs.

This nonprofit organization, which began as a spay and neuter clinic in April 2014, has evolved significantly since its inception. With its new location opening in April 2023, marked by an eye-catching purple and white sign, Paws for a Cause held a grand opening that featured Angie Bixler, the founder and president, along with local officials including Mayor Dan Daub and community leaders.

“Our goal is to alleviate the burden of trying to pay for groceries by families who visit our pantry,” Bixler stated. “We don’t check income because everyone needs a break.”

Visitors to the pantry can expect to find a diverse selection of items, including breakfast foods, feminine hygiene products, pet food, seasonal items, and even motor oil. The pantry boasts a stock room filled with overflow items and a refrigerated section for fresh dog food, all made possible by generous donations.

Recently, Ellen Tsopp from Wiconisco expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s absolutely something that helps anyone who comes. It has helped me with getting sugar, detergent, and pet food. It is wonderful for pet food.” Her daughter, Shelley Starr, a regular since 2020, echoed the sentiment, noting the pantry’s positive impact on the community.

The pantry operates every first Thursday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m., and on the third Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.. Additionally, there are separate days for craft supplies and ongoing community outreach events, including a pet vaccine clinic set to run from September 6 to November 1.

Currently, the pantry is supported by 20 to 25 dedicated volunteers. Long-time volunteer Ed Hause and fellow member Margie Koons have emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about the pantry’s services, which are crucial for many local families.

The community is invited to participate in the upcoming events, including the recent Christmas in July Auction held on July 25 and 26 at the Tower Legion Building.

Paws for a Cause is not just a pantry; it is a lifeline for many in Tower City and surrounding areas, proving that compassion and community support can come together to make a significant difference. This urgent update highlights the pantry’s expanding role in addressing immediate needs, and residents are encouraged to utilize this vital resource.
