Tigers Face Misconduct Allegations Against Eight Employees

URGENT UPDATE: A shocking report reveals that at least eight employees of the Detroit Tigers have been accused of misconduct toward women over the past two years. This alarming information comes from an investigation by The Athletic, published just hours ago, following interviews with 45 current and former employees and access to vital documents.
The allegations against these employees were part of a thorough inquiry that began in April 2023. The investigation uncovered serious issues within Ilitch Sports and Entertainment, the organization that owns the Tigers and other sports teams. The report highlights how female employees were subjected to misconduct by seven of the eight men named.
In a statement released today, the organization asserted, “We are committed to a culture of respect, safety, and inclusion.” They emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and harassment, outlining that when concerns are raised, they investigate promptly and take decisive action. Notably, six of the eight men accused were either fired or had their contracts terminated.
Among the most egregious cases is that of former assistant general manager Sam Menzin, who resigned in April after sending unsolicited, lewd photos to multiple female employees. Additionally, former sales vice president Michael Lienert resigned in 2023 after allegedly pushing a female colleague down a flight of stairs during an undisclosed relationship.
The report also mentions that Ben Fidelman, the director of communications and broadcasting, was investigated after a female employee alleged retaliation and gender discrimination. However, the organization refuted claims linking him to sexual harassment, stating that the investigation found no wrongdoing.
With fewer than three weeks left in the regular season, the AL Central-leading Tigers are approaching their first division title since 2014. The timing of this report raises significant concerns about workplace culture and safety, casting a shadow over the team’s achievements.
As this story develops, many are left wondering what further actions will be taken against those involved and how this will affect the Tigers’ organization moving forward. Stay tuned for updates as new information emerges.
