Thomas University Celebrates 75 Years with Inspiring Ceremony
UPDATE: Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia, marked its 75th anniversary with a compelling reception on January 6, 2026, highlighting the institution’s profound impact on education and community. University President Kurt Stringfellow welcomed attendees, expressing gratitude for their support over the decades.
During the event, Stringfellow emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and opportunity. “Our name, and even our location, does not fairly define who TU is,” he stated. “That definition is found in the individuals who chose to attend Thomas.”
Special guest speaker, Rosemarye Boykins, the first African American graduate from Thomas, delivered a heartfelt speech reflecting on her journey. Boykins, a graduate of the institution when it was known as Birdwood Junior College in 1969, shared her gratitude for the education she received and the community support she experienced as a student, mother, and wife.
“I’m deeply grateful that I had the opportunity for the education I received,” Boykins said. She honored her late husband, Samuel, who helped care for their children while she pursued her studies, and acknowledged key figures who supported her academic journey.
Boykins underscored the significance of her achievement, stating, “To be the first of anything is an incredible honor, but also a responsibility.” She expressed how her graduation symbolized hope and opened doors for future African American students at Thomas University.
Following Boykins, Clint Kadel, Chairman of the Thomas University Board of Trustees, reinforced the university’s mission. “Through every name and era, one reason has remained constant: to educate, to empower, and to inspire,” Kadel remarked, addressing new challenges facing higher education today.
The event culminated in a presentation from State Representative Darlene Taylor, who honored Thomas University with a resolution celebrating its remarkable history and future. Stringfellow concluded the ceremony with optimism, stating, “The future of Thomas University is bright. We are focusing on making Thomas University the best private university in the state of Georgia.”
This milestone not only commemorates the university’s past but also sets the stage for its future, inspiring current and prospective students to pursue their dreams and contribute to their communities.
