Therapy Dogs Bring Joy to Patients at St. Agnes Medical Center

UPDATE: Therapy dogs are making an immediate impact at St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, California, as the Heavenly Hounds Program continues to provide essential comfort and care to patients and staff. Franco, a spirited Great Dane known for his playful spirit and signature Batman cape, is a standout member of the program, which has been operational since 2007.
Franco’s handler, Gina Paul, a dedicated volunteer for nearly a decade, shared, “When he’s at work, he’s Batman, but at home, he’s Darth Vader.” This lighthearted approach helps patients engage and find joy during challenging times. “We just love walking down the halls and making people happy,” Paul added.
The Heavenly Hounds, numbering twelve, serve as therapy dogs within the hospital, focusing on enhancing mental well-being. They have proven to be vital in alleviating stress for patients, especially those preparing for surgery. “If they’re having a rough day, sometimes just one of the Heavenly Hounds coming by can change their day and make it positive,” said Brandon Miller, the hospital’s Volunteer Services Manager.
As demand for the therapy dogs rises, particularly in high-stress areas like the Emergency Room, the program is actively seeking to expand its ranks. Paul encourages dog owners to consider their pets for the initiative, stating, “If you think your dog can work in public, please get them out, socialize them, and get them tested.”
The impact of these therapy dogs is immediate and profound, providing critical emotional support in a hospital setting. As the program looks to grow post-pandemic, the community is encouraged to support this unique initiative, which brings smiles and comfort to countless individuals facing health challenges.
