TBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting Death in Tennessee
UPDATE: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has launched an urgent investigation into an officer-involved shooting that resulted in a man’s death during a standoff in Johnson City on Saturday afternoon. The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. when deputies from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of vandalism at a home located on Jarrett Buck Loop Road.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man armed with a gun who subsequently barricaded himself inside the residence. Authorities attempted to negotiate his surrender using chemical agents and other non-lethal tactics, but the situation escalated rapidly.
As deputies approached the barricaded area, the man opened fire, targeting both the officers and a law enforcement drone, which he ultimately destroyed. In a final attempt to force his surrender, deputies used a fire department water hose. At this critical juncture, for reasons still under investigation, deputies discharged their weapons, striking the man.
He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Remarkably, no law enforcement personnel were injured during this tense encounter.
The TBI is diligently working to independently clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting. This includes collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Findings from this investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney general for review.
