Svenska Spel Announces $3.7M in Urgent Grassroots Sports Grants
URGENT UPDATE: Svenska Spel, Sweden’s state-owned gambling company, has just announced a groundbreaking initiative to donate SEK 35 million ($3.7 million) to grassroots sports. This funding will benefit 8,784 sports associations across Sweden, marking a significant investment in the future of youth athletics.
The funds are part of the Gräsroten (Grassroots) initiative, which is designed to enhance youth sports by distributing money based on customer preferences. This year, Swedish youth soccer organizations are set to receive a substantial SEK 14.1 million, aiming to cultivate the next generation of professional athletes.
Additional allocations include SEK 6.3 million for ice hockey associations, SEK 1.6 million for handball, and SEK 1.5 million for floorball. Among the notable recipients, AIK Ishockeyförening will receive the largest share of SEK 647,038, while Leksands IF Ishockey and Djurgårdens IF will get SEK 564,307 and SEK 287,478, respectively.
A significant portion of these funds, amounting to SEK 5.8 million, will support clubs based in Stockholm. Meanwhile, associations in Västra Götaland and Skåne will receive SEK 5.3 million and SEK 4.5 million, respectively.
Svenska Spel’s initiative is especially notable as 59% of the recipient organizations are focusing on a more equitable distribution of resources between genders. This commitment is crucial for fostering a diverse and inclusive sporting environment.
Anna Johnson, president and CEO of Svenska Spel, emphasized the importance of investing in future athletes:
“This is how we want to take responsibility as Sweden’s largest sports sponsor, by giving back to the society that we ourselves are part of and creating joy and benefit for more people.”
The announcement has garnered praise from prominent athletes, including Three Crowns captain Sam Hallam, Olympic gold medalist Sara Hector, and national soccer team player Anton Saléthros. They all highlighted the critical need for creating opportunities for emerging sports professionals and commended Svenska Spel for its steadfast support of the sports sector.
In a related development, Svenska Spel confirmed it will not renew its sponsorship deal with Elitfotboll Dam, Sweden’s premier women’s soccer organization. However, the company will fulfill its current sponsorship term.
As the sports community awaits the distribution of these vital funds, the immediate impact of Svenska Spel’s commitment to grassroots sports is poised to resonate across Sweden, fostering talent and enhancing the sporting landscape for years to come.
