UPDATE: A suspect is dead following a dramatic deputy-involved shooting on US-1 in St. Johns County on Tuesday afternoon. The incident unfolded around 4:00 PM just south of the US-1 and International Golf Parkway intersection, as reported by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities confirmed that the shooting began when deputies responded to possible gunfire detected by a 911 operator. The suspect was spotted speeding down US-1 South, trying to evade law enforcement after allegedly shooting at a nearby business.

In a high-speed chase, deputies employed a PIT maneuver to force the suspect’s vehicle to crash. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene as the suspect fled on foot, armed with a handgun. According to officials, when deputies ordered him to drop the weapon, he failed to comply and was subsequently shot.

The investigation led to both lanes of US-1 being temporarily closed, with southbound traffic impacted for over two hours. Witness Stephanie Foss, who was caught in the traffic, described the scene as “hectic” and “very, very fast.”

Foss recounted seeing a nurse attempting to assist during the chaos, only to be turned away by deputies who informed her of the armed suspect’s dangerous situation. “Cops, detectives, everybody started flying in,” Foss stated, noting the significant law enforcement presence at the scene.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was reported to have died shortly after being airlifted to a nearby hospital. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a briefing to provide further updates on the situation at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

As this story develops, residents and travelers in the area are urged to stay informed. The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident thoroughly, with more details expected to emerge soon.
