Sumter County’s EMS Fees Slightly Exceed Ambulance Costs
URGENT UPDATE: Sumter County officials confirm that new emergency medical service (EMS) fees are slightly higher than the cost of providing ambulance services. This revelation comes as property owners raise concerns about the financial implications of these fees, which total $1,211,876.95.
County Administrator Scott Carver detailed the revenue generated by the EMS fees, stating that the funds are not meant to create a profit for the county. “Historically, not all billed amounts are collected,” Carver noted. He anticipates potential shortfalls that will require coverage from the General Fund. However, he added that any excess collections would be retained in the EMS enterprise fund to mitigate future inflation-related cost increases.
The county has contracted with AmeriPro to provide ambulance services at a cost of $1,146,709.92, exceeding the previous service’s bid from Gold Star EMS by $312,709.92. The EMS fees are projected to generate $65,167.03 more than necessary, assuming full payment of all fees.
Carver defended the decision to select AmeriPro, emphasizing the importance of their commitment to staffing standards, including guarantees that a paramedic will be present on every ambulance. “This is essential,” Carver stated, as EMT-Bs, EMT-Is, and EMT-As cannot administer critical medications and life-saving interventions.
In contrast, President of Gold Star EMS, Charles Proctor, argued that their service met contract terms by providing three ambulances staffed with Advanced Life Support personnel. “We employed one paramedic on every ambulance at our own expense,” Proctor said, highlighting their commitment to high-quality care.
As the community grapples with the financial ramifications of these changes, the county’s focus remains on ensuring adequate emergency medical services. The situation continues to develop, and residents are urged to stay informed about how these fees will impact them moving forward.
