URGENT UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for residents of Columbia, Ulster, and Dutchess counties in New York. The National Weather Service confirmed the storm is active until 1:45 p.m. today, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph.

According to the latest data, Doppler radar tracked a powerful storm over Port Ewen moving northeast at 45 mph. Residents in areas such as Kingston, Rhinebeck, Hurley, and Copake should be alert as conditions can quickly escalate, potentially knocking down tree limbs and tossing unsecured items.

The weather service warns, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.” As lightning strikes the U.S. around 25 million times annually, the risk of lightning-related incidents increases significantly during thunderstorms. Authorities advise staying vigilant and implementing a lightning safety plan.

Key Safety Recommendations:
– Monitor the sky and listen for thunder; if you hear it, seek shelter immediately.
– Once indoors, avoid using corded phones, electrical devices, and stay away from windows to reduce the risk of electrical surges.
– Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before resuming outdoor activities.

For those without access to indoor shelter, it’s crucial to:
– Avoid open fields and tall trees, which heighten the risk of lightning strikes.
– Stay near lower tree stands in wooded areas and spread out if in a group to minimize potential lightning current transfer.

Heavy rainfall accompanying these thunderstorms could lead to flooding. Authorities urge caution around swollen waterways and advise maintaining safe distances while driving. If caught in heavy rain, reduce speed, activate headlights, and avoid sudden braking to maintain control of your vehicle.

During the first 30 minutes of rainfall, roads can become extremely slick due to a mixture of rain, grime, and oil. Keep in mind that large vehicles can reduce visibility, so maintain a safe distance and exercise caution when navigating around them.

For the safety of all residents, stay informed about changing weather conditions and adhere to advice from local authorities. This is a developing situation, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.

Stay safe, New Yorkers!
