URGENT UPDATE: A significant public health investigation is underway as the Star Market located above the Massachusetts Turnpike has been closed due to potential asbestos exposure. The Newton Health and Human Services Department shut down the store at 33 Austin St. in Newtonville at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following concerns about a possible release of asbestos during recent demolition work inside the grocery store.

Commissioner Shin-Yi Lao stated, “Demolition work may have resulted in the release of asbestos into the building which might result in an imminent health hazard.” The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is currently assessing the situation to determine the extent of any contamination.

Star Market will remain closed until officials confirm that all asbestos has been safely removed or contained. A representative from the store indicated that they tentatively plan to reopen on Thursday afternoon, but this has not been officially confirmed.

A spokesperson for Star Market emphasized, “At Star Market, the safety of our stores is a top priority, and we take this matter seriously. We will continue to stay in close coordination with the Newton Health and Human Services Department as we work towards reopening the store.”

Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral known for its long, thin fibers, poses serious health risks. The Centers for Disease Control warns that inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to cancer and other lung diseases. While the U.S. began banning asbestos in the 1970s, it remains present in many older buildings, including the Star Market, which was constructed in 1960.

Customers and employees with concerns are urged to contact the Newton Health Department at 617-796-1420 or email [email protected]. One shopper expressed hope, stating, “Hopefully it’s nothing bad,” as they stood outside the closed store.

The situation is developing, and further updates will follow as health officials continue their investigation. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
