Southwell Ploughing Match Thrills 10,000 with Camel Racing

UPDATE: The Southwell Ploughing Match and Show captured the excitement of over 10,000 visitors this past weekend with thrilling events including camel racing and breathtaking BMX performances. Held at Farnsfield on Saturday, the event showcased a blend of traditional farming culture and modern entertainment.
The 105 competitors from across the UK highlighted the ploughing match’s reputation as a premier agricultural event. Participants included teams of heavy horses and a stunning steam ploughing demonstration, attracting crowds eager to witness the impressive displays.
Headlining the show was the high-energy performance of Defying Gravity, featuring freestyle BMX and extreme mountainboarding that left spectators on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, Joseph’s Racing Camels also drew significant attention, proving to be a fan favorite throughout the day.
The event’s organizing committee, led by Mrs. A. M. Hardstaff, Mrs. C. Y. M. Hardstaff, and Mrs. M. Allen, declared the day a resounding success. Show secretary Sam Tooley commented, “The camel racing was an absolute hit and went down very well. The tractor and trailer rides were brilliant and were full all day.”
In addition to the competitions, attendees enjoyed a vibrant display of over 180 trade stands offering locally-produced food, agricultural supplies, and crafts. The horticultural tent was packed with unique exhibits, including oversized pumpkins and perfect tomatoes.
The Scarecrow Gathering featured 25 straw-stuffed creations, while the companion dog show attracted an impressive 55 entries in the Prettiest Dog categories. The event not only entertained but also fostered community spirit, bridging generations of agricultural heritage and modern fun.
