UPDATE: Late-night storms are hitting metro Atlanta tonight, just hours before the coldest air of the season arrives on Monday. Residents are urged to stay alert as severe weather could impact overnight safety.

According to FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Joanne Feldman, clouds will give way to rain and thunderstorms starting around midnight and continuing through sunrise. “The better chance of some bigger storms will be from roughly midnight through sunrise,” Feldman noted. This timing poses a risk for those sleeping, making it essential to have weather alerts activated.

While Saturday will see mostly dry conditions with occasional sun and a few isolated showers, the calm will be short-lived. A significant temperature drop is expected Sunday night, with potential snow flurries in the North Georgia mountains early Monday. “We’re not forecasting accumulations out of that, but it’s definitely more of a winter-like feel,” Feldman warned.

Rainfall totals this weekend may reach up to one inch in areas experiencing severe storms, while most will see around half an inch or less. Once the rain clears, the chill sets in. Monday’s high is predicted to be only 44 degrees, and widespread temperatures in the 20s are expected Tuesday morning, marking the first hard freeze of the season for many Georgians.

Residents are advised to prepare now to protect their homes and families. Here are essential steps to take:

– Insulate pipes to prevent freezing
– Ensure pets and livestock are safe
– Check heating systems
– Make plans for outdoor events and community safety

As these weather events unfold, stay tuned to local updates and utilize the FOX 5 Storm Team app or a NOAA Weather Radio for real-time alerts.
