Scarborough Surges Past Kennebunk in Double Overtime Thriller
UPDATE: In a nail-biting finish, the Scarborough High girls soccer team triumphed over Kennebunk with a dramatic 1-0 victory in double overtime during the Class A South semifinals on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Abby Roberts sealed the win with a unique goal, propelling Scarborough into the finals and keeping their title defense alive.
The match, held at Scarborough, saw an intense battle with the Red Storm dominating play throughout. After a scoreless regulation and an equally tense first overtime, Roberts found the back of the net in the dying moments of the second overtime by using her upper body to push the ball across the line. “Always put your body on it no matter what. So it went kind of off my chest, face. Couldn’t be happier,” Roberts expressed after the game.
Scarborough, now boasting a record of 15-1, overcame Kennebunk for the second time this season, adding to their previous 1-0 victory earlier in the year. The team outshot Kennebunk 26-3, showcasing their offensive prowess. Kennebunk’s goalkeeper, Teagan Hanson, made an impressive 12 saves, but it wasn’t enough to fend off the relentless Scarborough attack.
Despite having a 17-2 advantage in shots during regulation, Scarborough struggled to convert opportunities, with Josie Duncan hitting the crossbar early on. The team’s midfield, anchored by Maggie Booth and Maya Taylor, constantly pressured Kennebunk, who relied heavily on their defensive line, including Ayla Plamondon and Camdyn Keenan.
“We had a lot of shots but didn’t quite get that last player to the ball until Abby did,” commented Scarborough’s first-year coach, Craig Roberts. Kennebunk’s first-year coach, Josh Viola, acknowledged Scarborough’s dominance, stating, “Scarborough deserved to win the game, no question.”
Looking ahead, Scarborough will face the winner of the matchup between No. 2 Falmouth and No. 3 Windham on Tuesday at Falmouth High, aiming to defend their regional title.
