San Diego Officer Involved in Gunfire Exchange During Pursuit
URGENT UPDATE: A San Diego police officer was involved in a dramatic exchange of gunfire with a suspect during a pursuit through Balboa Park on July 25, 2023. The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. when officers attempted to engage with a bicyclist at the intersection of Balboa Drive and Quince Drive.
According to Sheriff’s Lt. Juan Marquez, the suspect fled on his bicycle before abandoning it and continuing to evade officers on foot. The intense chase led officers through the park and onto a nearby hillside, where the suspect allegedly pulled out a weapon and fired a shot. In response, an unnamed officer returned fire multiple times, hitting the suspect at least once.
Medical aid was immediately rendered by the officers until paramedics arrived on the scene. The suspect was subsequently transported to a hospital, where his injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening, according to Marquez.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspect or the officer who discharged their weapon. A gun was recovered at the scene, prompting an extensive investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office under a countywide agreement that restricts departments from investigating their own officers in shooting incidents.
The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will also be closely monitoring the investigation as detectives gather evidence and interview witnesses.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in high-stakes situations. The community remains on edge as investigators work to piece together the events leading up to this dangerous confrontation.
