UPDATE: A historic glider flight has just shattered records, flying an astonishing 1,112 miles from Minden Tahoe Airport to Dodge City, Kansas. Pilots Gordon Boettger and Bruce Campbell completed this remarkable journey on December 19, 2023, fulfilling a dream that has spanned over four decades.

This epic flight marks the first successful glider journey across the country to Kansas, a feat Boettger has envisioned for years. “I’ve always wondered if the impossible was possible,” he stated. The conditions were favorable, and after meticulous planning, they took off at 3:09 AM local time, launching into the frigid morning air.

The duo faced fierce winds and technical challenges as they soared into the skies. Utilizing mountain wave conditions unique to the leeward side of the Sierra Nevada, they climbed to an altitude of 24,000 feet, navigating airspace shared with commercial flights. Boettger emphasized the importance of precise coordination with air traffic control, which provided them with a 4,000-foot block of altitude for their daring journey.

With support from co-pilot Campbell and a crew including Boettger’s wife, Melissa, they managed to overcome the numerous obstacles posed by the hostile environment. Boettger described the experience as “extremely cold” and “busy,” as they worked tirelessly to manage their oxygen supplies and navigate the unpredictable weather patterns.

The critical moment came over Monticello, Utah, where they encountered the mountain wave that would allow them to continue their flight across the Rockies. “If we hadn’t found a mountain wave, we would have landed in Durango, Colorado,” Boettger said, highlighting the high stakes involved.

After over 12 hours in the air, they finally touched down in Dodge City just after sunset. Their success was celebrated with a hearty meal at a local steakhouse, marking the end of a long-awaited dream.

The flight was not just a personal achievement but a significant moment for the gliding community. Boettger hopes to inspire a new generation of pilots, emphasizing the gliding potential of Minden as a soaring hub. “A lot of people here don’t know that Minden is a soaring mecca. I want to get young people involved,” he stressed, aiming to establish a soaring center at the airport.

As the news of their record-breaking flight spreads, the duo garnered remarkable attention, with Boettger livestreaming the event on social media, attracting up to 1.2 million viewers.

This extraordinary journey not only sets a new benchmark in gliding but also shines a spotlight on the capabilities of sailplanes. The successful flight underscores the importance of preparation, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of dreams, encouraging others to explore the skies.
