Rain Set to Drench Pasadena Rose Parade for First Time in 20 Years
UPDATE: Heavy rain is hitting Pasadena just hours before the 2025 Rose Parade, marking the first time in 20 years that the iconic event faces precipitation. The National Weather Service confirms a near 100% chance of rain on January 1, causing excitement and anxiety among thousands of spectators and participants alike.
Preparations for the parade are underway, with decorators busy finishing floats and spectators arriving early, clad in ponchos and rain gear. The last-minute hustle continues despite the looming rain, as the parade route stretches 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard.
Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian expressed confidence in the city’s readiness, stating, “We are in constant communication with the National Weather Service and our partners at the Tournament of Roses.” The city has planned for various scenarios, ensuring that all hands are on deck for the expected downpour.
This year’s Rose Parade is particularly significant as it celebrates the theme “The Magic in Teamwork,” coinciding with the 11th time in its 137-year history that rain has fallen on the event. The last occurrence was back in 2006, marking a rare instance in the parade’s storied history.
As rain falls tonight, spectators camping along the parade route will be braving the elements. In anticipation of the wet weather, city officials have reiterated that no umbrellas will be allowed along the route, as they obstruct views for fellow parade-goers. Instead, attendees are encouraged to use ponchos or rain jackets, easily found at local stores.
“We know rain or shine it’ll be a great Parade,” Derderian added, highlighting the resilience of the community after a challenging year. Volunteers like Jena Walker, who traveled from Louisville, Kentucky, remain undeterred by the forecast. Walker commented, “A little precipitation isn’t going to rain on my parade.”
The storm system, which moved in from the south, is expected to bring continued rain through New Year’s Day, impacting celebrations across the region. Many are left wondering how this weather will affect the floats and performances, including the much-anticipated appearance of grand marshal Magic Johnson.
As the hours tick down to the parade, all eyes are on Pasadena, where the community’s spirit remains unyielding. The promise of a soggy—but spirited—celebration is set to greet those lining the streets tomorrow morning.
