UPDATE: Los Angeles Rams star receiver Puka Nacua has issued an apology following backlash over an antisemitic gesture made during a livestream. The incident occurred on December 19, 2025, as Rams coach Sean McVay expressed his support for the young player amidst the controversy.

Nacua’s statement comes after he admitted to performing a gesture he later recognized as perpetuating harmful stereotypes against Jewish individuals. He stated, “I had no idea” about the gesture’s implications, emphasizing his commitment to learning from the incident.

In a heartfelt response, McVay confirmed that Nacua was “very apologetic” and stressed the importance of understanding the impact of one’s actions. “I know this guy’s heart,” McVay stated. “But we never want to do things that ever offend anybody.”

Despite the controversy, Nacua shone on the field later that night, recording 12 catches for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks. This performance set a new record for the most receiving yards by a Rams player since Isaac Bruce in 1997, marking his third consecutive game with over 150 receiving yards, tying the longest streak in NFL history.

After the game, Nacua tweeted, “Can you say I was wrong. Appreciate you stripes for your contribution. Lol,” referencing his earlier comments about NFL referees. During the livestream, he had criticized officials, stating, “the refs are the worst,” and accused some of making calls for attention.

However, in a post-game interview, Nacua clarified his stance, denying any belief that referees intentionally seek publicity. “It was just a lack of awareness and frustration,” he explained. “I know there were moments where I feel like, man, you watch the other games and you think of the calls that some guys get and you wish you could get some of those.”

McVay also downplayed any distractions caused by Nacua’s remarks, stating, “No, it wasn’t a distraction at all. He went off today.” The Rams ultimately lost the game against the Seahawks with a score of 38-37 in overtime.

Looking ahead, Nacua acknowledged the lessons learned from this week’s events, emphasizing the importance of being mindful of his comments and actions. “There is a time and place for some things,” he said, reflecting on the need to focus and prepare for upcoming challenges.

This developing story highlights the balance athletes must maintain between personal expression and public responsibility. As Nacua continues to navigate these challenges, fans and teammates alike are rallying behind him, eager to see how he grows both on and off the field.
