Police Shoot Armed Man After Gunfire Erupts in North Phoenix

UPDATE: Police have shot and wounded an armed man in north Phoenix after he opened fire on officers late last night. The incident unfolded around 11:34 p.m. on December 27, 2023, near Cactus Road and Interstate 17, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers were responding to an unrelated call when the situation escalated. As they were concluding their previous engagement, an adult man began yelling at them. In a sudden turn of events, he positioned himself behind a block wall, raised a handgun, and fired a shot at the officers.

The officers returned fire, striking the man, who fled north on 28th Drive before collapsing from his injuries. Immediate commands were issued, and officers approached him, taking him into custody while administering lifesaving aid until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries, which are reported to be non-life-threatening. As of now, no other injuries have been reported.

The investigation is currently underway by the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division. The identity of the shooter has not been disclosed at this time.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement and the urgent need for community safety. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward.
